Real Madrid need to find more ways to score goals

Raphael Varane has expressed that Real Madrid need to be doing more in an attacking, following their 0-0 draw with Real Betis at the weekend. Speaking before Real Madrid’s first Champions League semi-final match against Chelsea, the Frenchman stressed the need to create more challenges for the opposition’s defence in games. “We need to find more ways to score goals and inflict more damage on our opponents,” Varane admitted during Monday’s pre-match press conference. “We have confidence in our players. In the last 30 meters, we can do more damage and be more direct.” Chelsea have been renowned for their defensive toughness since Thomas Tuchel took charge in late January, but Varane also admits they have some offensive players that could cause problems for Los Blancos.

Chelsea are good up front

“They are a complete team; the important thing is that we adapt well to who we are going to face,” he said. “They are good up front, but they are also strong in defence, and they play from the back. We have to defend together and leave as little space as possible”. Varane has recently overcome a bout of COVID-19, but he is now looking forward to the final few weeks of the season. “I was able to relax with the help of COVID, although I felt a little bad at home,” he admitted. “Every year is a learning process; I always try to play a complete game. Every year I try to improve. I have played a lot this year. We have a dream to finish the season well and we are in the semi-finals of the Champions League. We want to end the season well.”

It was rumoured that the 28-year-old might leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, and he left the door open when asked about it. “My future is clear, and I am focused on the end of the season. That is the most important thing,” stated Varane.
