Afghanistan Rest Rashid Khan for Test Series Against New Zealand

The Afghanistan Cricket Board announced on Monday that spinner Rashid Khan will be rested for the upcoming one-match Test series against New Zealand due to his ongoing recovery from injury. Khan, one of the key players for the Afghan team, has not yet reached the required fitness levels for Test cricket following a recent hamstring injury.

Background

The decision to rest Rashid Khan was made after he was ruled out of The Hundred tournament on August 12. Despite participating in a few matches in the recent Shpageeza Cricket League (SCL) 2024, the all-rounder is still not fully fit to handle the demands of Test cricket.

Sayed Naseem Sadaat, the spokesperson of ACB, confirmed the news, stating, “Rashid was injured recently. He was given three to four weeks rest and although he played a number of Shpageeza T20 matches, for the longer format he is not healthy enough to take the load.”

ACB is hopeful that Rashid Khan will recover in time for the three-match ODI series against South Africa, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 18-22.

Preparation for the Test Series

The 20-member preliminary squad, led by captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, will depart for India on August 28 to attend a one-week preparation camp in Greater Noida ahead of the Test match against New Zealand.

Ahmad Shah Sulimankhel, the chief selector of ACB, mentioned that the final squad for the Test match will be announced at the end of the camp based on players’ performance and fitness levels. “20 players have been selected for the training camp, and a 15-member squad will be chosen to play the only Test match against New Zealand after evaluating their performance and fitness,” Sulimankhel stated in a press release.

Final Squad

The preliminary squad for the Test series includes Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Gulbadin Naib, Zahir Khan, and other talented players. The final 15-member squad for the Test match will be selected after the training camp in Greater Noida.

As Afghanistan prepares to face New Zealand in the Test match from September 9-13, cricket fans eagerly await the announcement of the final squad and the return of Rashid Khan to the ODI series against South Africa. Rashid Khan’s Impact on Afghanistan Cricket

Rashid Khan’s absence due to injury is a significant blow to the Afghanistan cricket team. As one of the top-ranked bowlers in the world, Khan’s spin bowling has been instrumental in Afghanistan’s success in international cricket. His ability to take wickets consistently and restrict the opposition’s scoring rate has made him a valuable asset for the team.

Without Rashid Khan, Afghanistan will have to rely on other bowlers to step up and fill the void left by the star spinner. This presents an opportunity for younger players to showcase their talent and make a case for a permanent spot in the team. The team management will need to devise strategies to cope with Khan’s absence and ensure that they have a balanced bowling attack against New Zealand.

Challenges Ahead for Afghanistan

Facing New Zealand in a Test match is no easy task, especially without a key player like Rashid Khan. The Afghanistan team will need to be at their best to compete against a strong New Zealand side known for their disciplined cricket and depth in both batting and bowling.

The preparation camp in India will be crucial for Afghanistan to fine-tune their skills and work on their game plan for the Test match. The coaching staff will play a vital role in identifying areas of improvement and instilling confidence in the players ahead of the challenging series.
