What happened to Real Madrid in the last few years? Even Under Zinedine Zidane, team is losing regular Champions League

Los Blancos returns to Bernabeu for Champions League

Real Madrid were celebrating the return of Champions League football to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu this week, though they must have forgotten what that meant. Los Blancos’s home record in Europe has been dire in recent seasons and Sheriff Tiraspol are now the latest club to take advantage of that, widening an already gaping wound. Real Madrid have won just one of their last seven Champions League games at the Bernabeu, coming against Galatasaray in the 2019/20 group stage. They’ve lost four times – 3-0 vs CSKA, 4-1 vs Ajax, 2-1 vs Manchester City, and now 2-1 vs Sheriff. They’ve also drawn 2-2 with both Club Brugge and Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid’s historic crisis

Real Madrid are living through a historic nightmare at home in Europe and one that also spilled over to Valdebebas as they lost at home to Shakhtar Donetsk last term. Carlo Ancelotti’s side had started their European campaign well with a win at Inter, but Sheriff have delivered them with a setback already and they have work to do to qualify for the round of 16. Having started the season well both domestically and in Europe, Los Blancos have now hit a speed bump. They weren’t at their best in the draw against Villarreal and now they’ve suffered a shock loss. With back-to-back matches against Shakhtar Donetsk to come, Real Madrid cannot afford any more slip-ups. Los Blancos is not in a big crisis to be honest. Team lost a few points there and here over the last few weeks. Still, the team is the leader of La Liga with teams like Sevilla and Atletico Madrid. Although Los Blancos lost the game against Sheriff, the team is still in the second position.
