Mariano Diaz was diagnosed with a muscle injury

Real Madrid have confirmed that Mariano Diaz would miss a derby match against Atlético Madrid. The Dominican was substituted an hour into the 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad. On Thursday, it was announced that the forward, who has made 15 appearances so far this season, has suffered a pelvic injury. A statement posted on the club’s website read: “Based on the results of the tests carried out today on Mariano Diaz by Real Madrid’s medical department, he was diagnosed with a muscle injury to the left external obturator. His recovery will be monitored”. Real Madrid have not put a timeframe on the 27-year-old. But it is expected to be out for two to three weeks. As well as the clash with Atletico, Mariano Diaz is likely to miss the home game against Elche on March 13.

Karim Benzema is preparing to be fit in time to line up against Atletico

He is also unlikely to play in the Champions League last-16 tie with Atalanta. And may also be unavailable for the outing against Celta on March 20. Diaz’s injury deprives Zinedine Zidane’s side of another striker heading into the league leaders’ meeting. Karim Benzema is preparing to be fit in time to line up in the attack against Diego Simeone’s side. The injury kept the France international out of Blancos’ last three games. The France international is the club’s top scorer this season, having found the net 17 times in 28 appearances in all competitions. If Benzema is unable to play at the weekend, 21-year-old Hugo Duro may be called on for the role of centre-forward. Duro has made just three first-team appearances for Real Madrid, having been promoted from the Castilla since Benzema’s injury.

The Los Blancos are already without captain and star centre-back Sergio Ramos, Eden Hazard, Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal. Marcelo could be ready to start after recovering from a muscle problem to face Real Sociedad. The club have won five and drawn one in their last six matches, heading into Sunday’s derby. They are five points behind Atlético in the lead, although the Rohiblancos still have a game in hand.
