At Real Madrid is a wish to sign at least one marquee addition
According to Michel, Real Madrid should resist the desire to spend big money on the likes of Erling Haaland and instead spend any transfer funds available to them on “four or five” new signings. The Blancos were famous for their ‘Galactico’ recruitment policy over the years. There is a wish at Santiago Bernabeu to welcome at least one marquee addition onto the club’s books every summer window. It has been suggested that at some stage, Real Madrid’s thoughts will include the likes of Haaland, who continues to star at Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappé. Many have speculated on deals to be struck in 2021. With LaLiga giants ready to spend again once the financial crisis of a coronavirus pandemic has eased.
The club needs four or five players
Michel, however, is not convinced that Zinedine Zidane should seek one or two big-money deals when there are several areas in his squad to do with reinforcing. The Blancos legend told reporters when asked if he would look for prolific Norwegian frontman Haaland into landing: “I would use this money for four or five players. I like Haaland, and he is progressing very well. He scores goals from all over the field, not just in the area. But Real Madrid need an injection of four or five players. They have lost in the second round of the Champions League in the last two years. They need more stability, and this is achieved by strengthening the squad”. Real were able to secure another LaLiga title last season. But the current campaign has seen all-too-familiar struggles for consistency resurface.
Michel believes Zidane remains the right coach to coach Real Madrid towards future triumphs. With a man who has made over 400 appearances for the club in his playing days. And a contract extension that is due to expire in 2021 in favour of talismanic captain Sergio Ramos. “Amazingly, a coach who has won three Champions League titles in a row never had a consensus on his ability as a coach,” added Michel. “He always handled difficult situations. I don’t think I have a problem giving Ramos a two-year deal, but it can’t be at any cost. If you don’t renew his deal, you’ll have to find another Ramos not only on the pitch but in the dressing room as well”. Real Madrid, who saw off Inter in their last Champions League away, will return to LaLiga action on Saturday when they play against Alaves.
