A World Cup every two years doesn’t make sense for Modric

Real Madrid will look to get their Champions League campaign back on track after a shock defeat to Sheriff in Madrid on Matchday 2, and Luka Modric is set to be involved, with the Croatian criticising FIFA for their proposed World Cup changes. Given the closeness of the last international break, this is a hot-button issue at present, with FIFA trying to push through a change that will see the World Cup played every two years. Yet, Modric feels as though players are never consulted adequately about such changes. “To me, a World Cup every two years doesn’t make sense,” Modric detailed in his pre-match press conference. “It’s special because everyone waits for four years. They don’t ask the players about anything; they try to do things without asking. To be honest, I don’t want to watch the World Cup every two years.”

Modric became the first player to break the Cristiano Ronaldo/Lionel Messi duopoly of the Ballon d’Or award. However, he is now firmly behind the campaign to get Los Blancos teammate Karim Benzema anointed with the trophy. “Let’s see, there are several candidates, Karim is one of them, and I hope he wins,” Modric continued. “He deserves it because of how he has played this year and because of his career. He has always been at the top level and has finally won a title with France, which is also important; he is one of the top candidates for sure.” After the defeat against Sheriff, the former Spurs midfielder was clear that Los Merengues didn’t have any more room for failure in their Champions League campaign. “We don’t have much more room for error after the last defeat,” Modric declared.

“I think that after the international break, we have trained very well. We’re ready for the game, and I’m sure we’re going to have a great game.”
