Cricket“Didn’t bring my sandpaper” – Rishi Sunak and Australian PM sledge each other at NATO summit

The United Kingdom’s PM Rishi Sunak and the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently clashed in a low-key meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Lithuania. This happened after Albanese presented Sunak with a piece of paper with the current Ashes series scoreline of 2-1 written on it. Both of them posed for the photos, but Sunak also brought a picture of English batsmen Mark Wood and Chris Woakes celebrating the third test win in Leeds.

Sunak tweeted after the meetup

Trying not to give up, Albanese drew another picture of Bairstow’s dismissal by running out in the second test and said “I was going to be really provocative”. Then Sunak quickly replied, “Sorry, I didn’t bring my sandpaper with me”, referring to the ball tampering scandal in 2018. After this meetup, Sunak took to Twitter and wrote “I promised Anthony Albanese that I would give him one or more ministerial folders”. Naturally, it comes with a little reminder of last weekend—two more to go.

The Australian PM defended his country

Earlier on Tuesday, the Australian Prime Minister defended his country’s Ashes cricket team after Sunak said that Bairstow’s dismissal in the second test was against the spirit of the game. Albanses wrote on Twitter, “Same old Aussies, always winnings, alluding to the slogan chanted by English fans, “Same old Aussies, always cheating,” after the decision. When England was at 193/5 and chasing a gigantic target of 371 runs, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey hit the stumps after English batsman Jonny Bairstow left his crease at the end of an over during the match.

This year’s Ashes series has been full of controversy since the first match. From sledging to dismissals and targeting statements, cricket fans are seeing everything. It all started with English bowler Ollie Robinson cursing Usman Khawaja on the field, and later former Australian cricketers also came into the picture and passed various statements for Robinson. Australian media also didn’t back down from making fun of England’s cricket team and got replies in return. Bairstow’s dismissal created the biggest fuss, which angered the English fans to another level. Currently, Australia is leading the Ashes series 2-1; the fourth test will begin on July 19 at Old Trafford. If England wins this match too then the series will go till the final match and if Australia wins, they will clinch the series.
