Robbie Fowler reflects on why Mohamed Salah has yet to sign Liverpool’s new terms
Mohamed Salah at Anfield has yet to commit to new terms beyond 2023 and the former frontman has wondered why that might be.
A little about the topic
The Egyptian player, saying he will be with the Reds next season no matter what happens on the contracting front, was clearly a threat, says Robbie Fowler, with the Liverpool legend asking questions about the Anfield settlement. Discussions regarding the new conditions for the mascot presence dragged on for some time, but no paperwork has been signed, and the three-time Golden Boot winner may be working towards free agency in 2023.
Efforts are being made to prevent such an occurrence – especially since Senegalese footballer Sadio Mane has already left for Bayern Munich – but Robbie believes more needs to be done to convince Mohamed that his position among the world’s elite is recognized.
What did Fowler say about Mohamed Salah?
English manager Robbie Fowler, who took two spells at Anfield during his playing days and is affectionately known as God by Liverpool supporters, has spoken of the long-running Mohamed Salah saga on Merseyside that he will pretend what happens to his contract but clearly the answer is: nothing special. And that leaves so many questions unanswered.
According to Fowler, one thing is clear, the club made some very clear, precise and unemotional calculations with Sadio. He is 31 in April, the player has a huge amount of footwork and wanted a huge contract as one of the best players in the world. Robbie doesn’t blame him for this. Sadio is the equal of virtually every world-class star at the moment, and rightly wanted to see this recognition with going speed for the last big contract of his career.
What the Reds did so clearly was their analytics – which to their credit they are doing so well – and decided to sell him in order to buy Darwin Nunez and keep their salary structure right for the club. “Begs the question, what calculations did they do on Mohamed?” Robbie Fowler said.
Again, Robbie doesn’t know all the answers, but what screams to him so clearly is that they won’t break their pay structure to keep him. If they were ready to do it, it would have already happened. But Fowler can’t blame Mohamed for wanting to pick up speed like Sadio did. He is the owner of the golden boot PL, he is the Footballer of the Year and in with a big cry Ballon d’Or triples.
“What salary does a player in the top three in world command receive?”. The English manager says he obviously thinks it’s more than Liverpool are offering. But according to Robbie, if his old club does complex calculations, so does Mohamed – and that can never be an exact science. The Englishman thinks that whatever happens to his contract he will be at Anfield next year was clearly a threat.
