Robin Gosens moved to Inter from Atalanta in the winter window, having decided not to take on a new challenge in the PL.

What did Robin Gosens say?

The German footballer revealed that he turned down a big money transfer to Newcastle in January, despite claiming he could probably provide the money for several more generations of his family. The German international enjoyed a stellar 2020-21 campaign with Atalanta which earned him a place in Germany’s Euro 2020 squad and he also impressed during that tournament despite his country’s disappointing run into the last 16. Robin Gosens started to raise a lot of transfer interest as a result, and eventually decided to join Inter in January with the Serie A champions, securing an initial €25m loan deal.

Newcastle have also identified the German player as a target, but his preference has always been to go to the San Siro. Robin Gosens has now confirmed that a lucrative package was waiting for him at St James’ Park, saying he had a contract offer but turned it down. Robin would have jeopardized his athletic goals. The talented left-back, however, admitted that he was strongly tempted by Newcastle’s offer given the potential long-term financial benefits.

Robin Gosens added that he thinks it’s very human to think about it. According to Gosens, if they can earn many times more for the same job at another club, show him someone who simply says no, thanks. It’s not just about him, Gosens could probably provide for several more generations of his family with the money.

A little about the topic

Newcastle may have missed the German player, but they were still able to bring in a number of new recruits before the winter transfer deadline. Magpies have spent more than £90m on Burn, Wood, Guimaraes and Trippier, showing their financial strength after completing a Saudi-backed takeover last October. Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe also welcomed Matt Targett to the club on loan from Aston Villa, with Newcastle now in much better shape to achieve their goal of avoiding relegation from the PL.
