This team, which joined the IPL in 2008, could not do anything special in its first season and was at the bottom of the points table, but the next year in 2009, this team made a very good comeback and won the IPL 2009 title which was held in South Africa.
Rohit Sharma spent 3 years with Deccan Chargers but became a part of the Mumbai Indians team in the IPL in 2011. It’s been 15 years of IPL and on this important occasion, Rohit Sharma shared some of his stories related to Deccan Chargers of his time.
In a show hosted by Star Sports, he shared a few things about his 2008 and 2009 season. “The 2009 season was a memorable season, this was the great moment because we had the last finish in the IPL the year before. Because we couldn’t win the first six games.”
“The third game we beat Mumbai Indians and in that game Gilchrist who scored 100 and another match that we won, against Chennai, beat both the best teams in the tournament.”
“So we also thought man, how is this like this? We are losing to the rest of the teams. I’m not saying the rest of the team were weak, but they didn’t have a good record. Their team’s balance was not good.”
“We didn’t win that match, we came to the bottom and from there we got the result of the changes we made the next year. We changed our entire plan, changed the way we played and I still remember the IPL was held in South Africa, we arrived there 15 days before the IPL match and we had a good discussion there about how we will play.”
“What strength do we have, what is our weekness? There was a lot of discussion on how the pitch here would suit us and it was very good that after the table was in the bottom, you topped the next year’s table and won the tournament.”
“Adam Gilchrist was someone who gave a lot of confidence to the young players in the team with him. Only good things came out of his mouth. He always encouraged players to excel in their game. And it was absolutely right because he had a lot of experience playing this game and he used to share it with all of us.”
