Rohit Sharma: The New Test Captain
Virat Kohli’s step down from captaincy came to shock everyone. The series against South Africa was full of learning curves for the whole Indian team.
We should understand that Rohit Sharma is not here to fill the vacant place that Kohli left. He is here to lead the team in his own way.
Rohit Sharma was appointed as skipper last week. The confirmed news came out during a press conference to reveal the Test and T20I squads for the home series against Sri Lanka.
Rohit takes up the Test leadership from Virat Kohli, who stepped down after India’s 2-1 series loss to South Africa. Rohit has previously been chosen the ODI and T20I captain.
Rohit debuted for India in Test format in 2013. However, it took his time to establish his place firmly. It wasn’t until 2019 that he established himself as a regular in the red-ball format.
Since being shifted to open the batting order, the 34-year-Test old’s career has taken a turn for the better in recent years. He has amassed 1462 runs at an average of 58.48 since then. Being a terrific ball bitter, he was included in the ICC Test Team of the Year for 2021.
Captaincy Experience
When it comes to captaincy, Rohit has had a strong start as India’s permanent ODI and T20I captain. His portfolio includes series victories against New Zealand and the West Indies.
He’ll be hoping to continue the winning streak into the Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins next week. Following his appointment as the new Test captain, Rohit received well wishes from all across the world.
India in Test Championship
In the previous edition, India came too close to winning the title but lost to the New Zealand. This year, India is placed at 5th place.
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India is expected to move to better place to concrete the chances of final qualification.
India will be facing Sri Lanka next week. The Sri Lankan side is in rebuilding zone and they have faired well so far. Currently at the top, Sri Lanka will be a challenge for the new skipper.
