Koeman is open to a renewal
Ronald Koeman is only contracted until the end of the 2021/22 season. Yet, he has confirmed he is very excited to continue as Barcelona’s coach for many years amidst speculation Joan Laporta is to hand him an extension. Life in the Blaugrana hot-seat has been far from comfortable for the Dutchman thus far, negotiating a problematic first season which saw a Presidential change, whilst his second summer in charge has been plagued by cost-cutting and the departure of Lionel Messi. “I’m open to a renewal; I’m very excited to continue as Barcelona coach for many years,” Koeman declared in an interview with Sport and Mundo Deportivo. “Despite the difficult moments in the club today, I think that thanks to the decisions made, coaching and the technical staff as well as the young players, I hope I can continue to coach here for three, four or five years.”
The Dutchman is looking for formulas to improve the team
“Above all, I consider myself a club man; I have always believed that I must help the club where I am, looking for formulas to improve the team without compromising the good of the club.” Many expected Laporta would quickly look to end Koeman’s contract with the club and bring in his appointment, yet that hasn’t yet been the case, and the former Everton coach believes his relationship with the president is positive. There have been two difficult moments, the one at the end of last season and the one last week,” Koeman added. “Once again, the president did well last night and has made things very clear; I liked it because you always have to leave things in the past. Moving forward, we have a good relationship, we speak about things, and we are moving forward, and this club has a great future.”
Barcelona were unable to get rid of Samuel Umtiti this summer, whilst Riqui Puig’s situation is also a challenging one. “I give opportunities to players looking for the best for the club and looking to win a match,” Koeman continued. “I don’t want to talk about Umtiti and Puig, but I speak in general terms, a coach always looks for the strongest team, and each player has their opportunities and can show in training. If not, it’s the coach’s decision because there is a lot of competition.”
