Bruno Lage believes that if Portugal player Ruben Neves leaves Wolves, he will cost £100 million to potential suitors.

Wolves are in contract talks with the 25-year-old, although he has also been linked with Barcelona, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

According to reports published on Thursday, Neves is Erik Ten Hag’s top objective if he takes over at Old Trafford this summer.

‘I don’t know if it’s Man United or other teams, but I do know we have a special player here with us,’ Lage stated before of Wolves’ Premier League match against Newcastle on Friday.

‘I think what he’s accomplishing this season is fantastic. I believe that the style we play allows him to exhibit a better Ruben, and that the way he plays elevates our team to a higher level.

‘Once you have that athlete, the best thing you can do is increase his salary and contract length.’

‘However, when you have a top player like him in that exact position, who can defend and attack and is a top professional and a terrific man, the big teams are there with £100 million to buy these kinds of players,’ says the coach.

Neves’ current contract expires in 2024, and he is currently out with a knee injury that will keep him out until May.

After his initial reservations, Lage is now more optimistic that Neves will play before the conclusion of the season and wants his compatriot to continue at Molineux.

‘I would have wanted to stay with Joao Felix at Benfica, but 120 million euros came along and he departed,’ said Lage.

‘It also depends on Wolves’ tactics. That’s why finding players in the last two transfer windows was so difficult.

‘We want to identify the greatest players at the appropriate price and at the right age to assist us, so that in two or three years they can generate a profit for us.’

‘It’s not only Wolves; which team these days can turn down an offer of 80, 90, or 100 million pounds? ‘About five or six.’

By beating Newcastle at St James’ Park, Wolves will move above Manchester United and West Ham into the top six for at least a few hours.

However, whichever way Wolves end this season, Lage believes that next season will be even more tough for them.

‘Behind Wolves, there are teams like Aston Villa, Everton, Newcastle, and Leicester who are willing to invest heavily,’ he stated.

‘They are willing to invest, improve, and compete in a variety of tournaments.’

‘The challenge for us is to build and create the ideal team to compete against all of the Premier League’s teams.’

After consecutive away defeats to Chelsea, Everton, and Tottenham, Newcastle is seven points clear of the relegation zone.

‘If I were in that position with 31 points, I would say no,’ Lage said when asked if Newcastle were safe.

‘I’d rather get more points.’ I believe you can be safe with 34 or 35 points, but not with 31.’
