Wout Weghorst may not be the ideal solution for Manchester United and could find it challenging to net additional goals for the team, according to Louis Saha’s assessment.

Surprise Addition to the Red Devils

The Dutch international unexpectedly joined Manchester United during the January transfer window. Erik ten Hag, the team’s coach, acquired his fellow countryman after Cristiano Ronaldo was released as a free agent. Although Weghorst’s work ethic is never doubted, the 30-year-old forward has only scored twice in 25 appearances across all competitions. It is unlikely that his loan from Burnley will turn into a permanent move this summer. Saha believes there is no reason for United to consider that option, as the Dutch striker might leave without making another significant impact.

Saha’s Assessment of Weghorst’s Performance

Former United striker, Saha, expressed his opinion to Paddy Power, stating that Weghorst needs to improve his scoring numbers for a club like Manchester United. With support from players like Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Anthony, a striker should be able to score 15-20 goals a season. Saha thinks Weghorst’s work ethic is commendable, but it is not sufficient. From his perspective, Weghorst has not proven he deserves a place in the team beyond the summer. However, Saha acknowledges that the manager has a better insight since he observes Weghorst in training daily.

Wout Weghorst’s Contributions and United’s Future Plans

Weghorst has dedicated himself to the United cause, contributing to the team’s victory in the 2023 Carabao Cup final and even playing as a No.10 at times. Nevertheless, his ability to excel at the highest level has been questioned. With Weghorst likely to leave this summer and Anthony Martial still struggling to impress, United is expected to invest heavily in a new No.9. Potential targets include Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, both of whom have caught the attention of the Red Devils’ recruitment team.

Early Career and Achievements

Wout Weghorst began his professional football career with FC Emmen in the Netherlands in 2012. In his first season with the club, he made 34 appearances and scored eight goals. His performance caught the attention of several clubs, and in 2014, he transferred to Heracles Almelo. At Heracles, Weghorst continued to showcase his goal-scoring abilities, netting 23 times in 73 appearances over two seasons.
