In a stunning turn of events during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2023 match between the Salem Spartans and the Chepauk Super Gillies, Salem Spartans captain Abhishek Tanwar found himself on the wrong side of an unwanted record. Tanwar conceded a whopping 18 runs off just one legal delivery in the final over of the match held in Coimbatore on Tuesday night.

Abhishek Tanwar, who was the highest wicket-taker in the previous TNPL season, faced a nightmare over, giving away 26 runs in total. The final ball of the over proved to be disastrous as it was smashed for a six, resulting in 18 runs being scored off that single delivery. The Chepauk Super Gillies posted a formidable total of 217 for 5 after opting to bat first, with Sanjay Yadav remaining unbeaten on 31 off just 12 balls.

Tanwar Bowls Costliest Last Ball In Indian Cricket History

The calamitous over began with Tanwar bowling a no-ball, which resulted in a single for the opposition. This was followed by another no-ball on the ensuing free-hit, which was sent soaring over the boundary for a six, adding 9 runs to the score. Continuing the onslaught, Tanwar bowled yet another no-ball, this time yielding 3 runs. A wide was conceded on the next free-hit, and to cap it off, a six was struck on the final free-hit of the over.

Prior to this incident, the record for the most runs conceded off a single legal delivery was held by Travis Birt in the Big Bash League 2013-14 season, where he hammered Clint McKay for 20 runs off 1 ball. In an ODI match in 2004, India’s Virender Sehwag had smashed Pakistan pacer Rana Naved-ul-Hasan for 17 runs off a single ball.

Following the match, Abhishek Tanwar shouldered the responsibility for the disastrous over, expressing his disappointment as a senior bowler. He attributed the challenging wind conditions as a contributing factor to his struggle on the field.

In their pursuit of the mammoth total set by the Chepauk Super Gillies, the Salem Spartans faltered and could only manage 165 for 9 in their allotted overs. Muhammad Adnan Khan emerged as the top-scorer for the Spartans with a blistering knock of 47 off just 15 balls, which included six sixes. The Chepauk side showcased a disciplined bowling performance, with Baba Aparajith, Rocky Bhasker, and M Viju Arul each claiming a pair of wickets.
