After the IPL 2022 season, India played their first international tournament at home against South Africa and the series ended in a tie. Team India will now move to Ireland for a two-match series before traveling to England for the grand tour. Some players have been rested, some new faces have been added to the team as India continue their quest for the last 15 for the 2022 T20 World Cup. In midst of this, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar spoke on the return of the 27-year-old star, whose “tremendous abilities” he praised. Yes, Sanju Samson has been in game for a long time but he has not got so many opportunities to play international cricket.

Samson had an impressive IPL 2022 season, where he scored 458 runs in 17 innings, in the final of Rajasthan Royals, with two half-centuries at a strike rate of 146.79. Before the IPL season, he was recalled to India’s squad for the home series against Sri Lanka, where he faced 37 balls in two innings, scoring 57 runs at a strike rate of 154.05.

Speaking to Star Sports on his selection, Gavaskar advised that Sanju Samson needs to work on his shot selection to cement his place in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup.

“Everyone deserves more chances but you have to make the most of them. The thing that has let Sanju Samson down as we all know he has tremendous shot selection ability while playing for India. He wants to attack with the first ball and even in T20 Internationals he has the opportunity to put his feet up, set his sights… you know from the lights and the pitch etc.”

With just two matches in the series, which will also mark the return of Suryakumar Yadav, Samson may get opportunities to play the limited overs series but Gavaskar wants the youngsters to make the most of it.

Sunil Gavaskar while discussing Star Sports said on Sanju Samson, “So, yes, if his shot selection is better then he will be so much more consistent whether it is for India or his franchise. Then no one will ask questions about his place in the team.”
