The redevelopment of the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is nearing completion, with football set to return to the arena in one month.

Construction is already over

Having started construction in earnest as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, Real Madrid have seen their stadium project move way ahead of schedule, and they are now turning their focus to hiding evidence of construction work for the reopening on September 12. There is, though, quite a lot of work still to be done before football is played at Los Blancos’ spiritual home once again, most notably there needs to be grass laid down where the pitch should be.

Certain parts of the stands also have no seats, which needs to be rectified quickly, although these are considered to be rather minor installations, despite how important they both are to the actual concept of a football match. Workers will now move quickly as Los Blancos seek to avoid the indignity of having to play home matches at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. They are currently working near 24 hours a day, in three shifts of eight, with more than 800 employees working on the pitch and the stands.

Field is already done

The retractable grass system is covered right now, so that the grass to be used this season can be installed on top. As soon as this is complete, a provisional plate will be placed on which the turf is placed, and this will take place over three consecutive nights at the end of August. Stands have the same progress from the workers team. As soon as the pitch is covered, the lower tier stands will be built, although given there will be an attendance limit placed on La Liga Santander matches for the time being, these lower portions may not need to be fully finished for September 12.
