Williams’ magnificent knock of 174 off just 101 balls, supported by stellar performances from Joylord Gumbie, Sikandar Raza, and Ryan Burl, propelled Zimbabwe to their highest-ever ODI total of 408/6. The hosts then wrapped up the match by bowling out the USA for a mere 104 runs, securing their fourth consecutive win in the group and marking the second largest winning margin in terms of runs in ODI history.
A Record-Breaking Display of Batting Prowess
Opting to bat first, Zimbabwe’s opening pair of Gumbie and Innocent Kaia provided a solid start, adding 56 runs for the first wicket. Kaia’s dismissal brought the in-form Sean Williams to the crease, who wasted no time in showcasing his aggression by striking 6, 4, 4 off Nisarg Patel’s bowling in the 15th over.
Williams continued his onslaught, forming a crucial partnership with Gumbie and reaching his half-century in just 33 balls. He went on to complete his century in a mere 65 balls, marking the second-fastest ODI hundred by a Zimbabwean batsman.
Despite the loss of Gumbie, Williams forged valuable alliances with Sikandar Raza and later Ryan Burl. The partnership between Williams and Raza was particularly devastating, as they bludgeoned the USA bowlers, accumulating runs at a rapid pace.
They brought up their fifty-run stand in just 27 balls, piling on the misery for the opposition. By the time Raza departed for a well-compiled 48, Zimbabwe had already crossed the 300-run mark in the 43rd over. Burl then unleashed a furious assault, adding a quickfire 47 off just 16 balls to propel Zimbabwe’s total even higher.
Williams eventually fell for a remarkable 174 in the penultimate over, while Tadiwanashe Marumani smashed 19 runs in the final over, propelling Zimbabwe’s total to a mammoth 408/6.
USA’s Struggles and Zimbabwe’s Clinical Bowling
Chasing the daunting target, the USA faltered right from the beginning. Richard Ngarava drew first blood, dismissing Steven Taylor caught behind in the third over. In his next over, Ngarava struck again, claiming the wicket of Sushant Modani in similar fashion.
The USA’s situation worsened as skipper Monank Patel fell in the sixth over, followed by run-outs of Aaron Jones and Shayan Jahangir. With Gajanand Singh being trapped lbw by Sikandar Raza, the USA was in complete disarray at 45/6. Despite some resistance from Abhishek Paradkar and Jessy Singh in the lower order, the USA could only muster a paltry 104 runs before being bowled out in the 25th over.
