PSG start their Ligue 1 campaign on Saturday against Clermont Foot 63 at the Stade Gabriel Montpied, looking to defend their title, for which they start as favourites. Sergio Ramos is looking to have a far more active campaign than last season, which was ravaged by injury, and the Spaniard seemed in good spirits for what lies ahead. Last summer, the former Real Madrid captain arrived in the French capital from Los Blancos. He finished the 2020/21 season injured and had to miss Euro 2020, coming at the pre-season still in pain. Those pains meant that 21/22 was the season in which he played the least amount of professional football (12 games, all of them in Ligue 1) since joining Sevilla’s first team in 2004. His team won Ligue 1 but lost to Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.
The Spaniard still have a little problem with the French language
Now, he is looking to make up for a lost time, having already started well by winning the French Super Cup. “I’m thrilled to start the season by winning a title, but above all, to feel good physically. I think it’s going to be a fascinating season,” he said. He also spoke about Christophe Galtier, the new PSG coach. “At the moment, we’re doing well, but we need to get some time to build up our confidence and adjust to the new system,” he said, with PSG now likely to play a back three. “I still have a little problem with the language, but I think we understand the system quite well because he is a great coach, he is a wise man, and we have to translate his idea on the pitch.”
“The back three gives us balance and gives security to the attacking players. We close down the flanks earlier, and they can go down the line more calmly. Little by little, we are getting to know each other’s weaknesses and abilities.”
