Despite that setback, Torino’s current crop still stand four points better off than the team did after six Serie A rounds back then.

Torino

Filling in for the stricken Ivan Juric, Torino assistant coach Matteo Paro vowed his team would “fight for a result” against Inter last weekend. They did exactly that, but a late lapse at the back prevented them from taking an away point from the Nerazzurri – something they last achieved in 2018/19, which is still the most recent season to see ‘Il Toro’ finish inside the top seven. Despite that setback, Torino’s current crop still stand four points better off than the team did after six Serie A rounds back then.

Subsequently unbeaten in their two home Serie A games so far, they can now record a chain of three Serie A home clean sheets for the first time since the winter of that strong 2018/19 campaign with a shutout here, providing some justification for the lowest scorers (six goals) of any top ten side if they wish to sit back on a lead.

Sassuolo

Sassuolo were given no choice but to try and hold onto their own lead last weekend after a dismissal for Ruan Tressoldi late in the first half. Still, a 1-0 lead over Udinese became a 3-1 loss, all the same, leaving the ten-man Neroverdi winless in four matches. In the aftermath, coach Alessio Dionisi was philosophical but identified a weak spot after implying that some of their midfielders were struggling to get forward. Dionisi’s words appear to be well chosen when taking a closer look at Sassuolo’s current run of just one win in nine competitive away matches. The earlier stages particularly back his views up, with no open-play goals before half-time across those five defeats.

Torino’s Antonio Sanabria netted in last season’s corresponding fixture. He awaits his first home goal of 2022/23, but three of the five he scored here last term were headed by match openers. Meanwhile, Andrea Pinamonti is still Sassuolo’s most recent away day scorer, and his last 21 goalscoring matches have seen both teams net! Four of Torino’s last five home H2Hs vs Sassuolo have seen a 1-0 half-time scoreline either way.
