CricketShane Warne and Meg Lanning To Be Honoured At Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday

Australia women’s team captain Meg Lanning and the late Shane Warne have been included in the annual Queen’s Birthday Honors List. Lanning, 30, was awarded a Member of the General Division (AM) for significant service to women’s cricket at the elite level.

Three-time Belinda Clark Award winner, who has scored more ODI hundreds than any other woman and who has represented her country on 221 occasions. Lanning has led his team to unmatched success in all formats since assuming the captaincy for the first time at the age of 21. Lanning led Australia to victory in the ODI World Cup in New Zealand in April, registering three T20 World Cup victories in 2014, 2018 and 2020.

Warne, who died suddenly of a suspected heart attack on March 4 at the age of 52, shocked and saddened the cricketing world, he was posthumously recognized for his distinguished service to cricket as a player, role model and commentator. An Order (AO) of Australia has been appointed for this.

Shane Warne ended his international career with 708 Test wickets and 293 in One Day Internationals, placing him second on the list of all-time international wicket-takers, and following his retirement, as a coach, mentor and remained prolific in the game. He lived like the king of his winning who never compromised with the circumstances.

But Sunday’s honor was also given to Warne for his service to the wider community through charity and philanthropy. Those acts include the auction of his baggy green test cap, with all proceeds dedicated to bushfire victims, and his Shane Warne Foundation, which raised $7.8 million to support sick and disadvantaged children in Australia.

He was a donor to the My Room Children’s Cancer charity. and a longtime supporter of the Challenge, which also helped children with cancer, and has donated memorabilia and fundraising events to a number of charities including the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Australian Red Cross, Scope and the Small Steps Project. Former players Muriel Picton and Doug Walters were also awarded Members of the General Division (AM) for significant service to Australian cricket at the elite level.

Picton is a former captain and respected administrator of the Australian women’s Test team, while Walters has played 74 Tests and 28 ODIs and is a member of the Cricket Australia Hall of Fame.

“Shane Warne was one of the most talented and charismatic cricketers the world has ever produced and we are reminded today of the indelible legacy he has built both on and off the field.”
