Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has named Virat Kohli as the best batsman among the ‘Big Five’ in Test cricket. Watson did not give much attention to the aspect that Kohli has failed to score a century since November 2019.

According to Watson’s list, former India captain Kohli has overtaken Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, Joe Root and Babar Azam. In the latest episode of ICC Review, when Isha Guha asked Watson who he thinks is the best Test batsman in the world, he said, “In Test match cricket I will always say Virat Kohli.”

Watson said, “He’s almost a superhuman, what he’s been able to achieve is because he goes down with so much passion every time he plays.”

Kohli has slipped to the 10th position in the ICC rankings but the record of this legendary batting in Test cricket is excellent. He has scored 27 Test centuries and 28 half-centuries and his current Test batting average is 49.96.

The ICC said in a report on its website that the world’s number one Test batsman is Marnus Labuschagne who has scored 2390 runs in 26 Tests at an average of 54.31. In his presence, the ‘Big Five’ should have been considered the ‘Big Six’ but due to his eligibility to play a minimum of 40 Tests, he did not find a place in it.

Australia Faces Another Loss Ahead Of ODI Series Against Pakistan

Shane Watson has placed Pakistan captain Babar at number two. Watson said that Babar Azam is batting brilliantly. He added, “The way he has adjusted to his game and done well in Test cricket is great to see. Babar Azam is probably number two right now.”

Babar is currently the number five batsman in the ICC rankings and if we look at the current performance against Australia, he played some wonderful knocks. He played a brilliant innings of 196 against Australia in the second Test in Karachi and scored 390 runs in the series.

Smith is the third best batsman in Watson’s list. “It seems that Smith has started thinking of spending more time at the crease and is not putting as much pressure on the bowlers as he used to when he was at the top of his game. For me Smith is a bit low on this list,” Shane Watson further added. Smith is at the second position in the ICC rankings.

Watson, who considers Williamson to be the fourth best batsman at the moment, said, “Kane knows his game very well and knows how to put pressure on the bowlers in any situation.” Williamson has played only two Tests in the last 12 months and is the third-best batsman in the Test rankings.

On Root, his fifth-best batsman, Shane Watson said, “Joe Root hit a century recently but he has been like Steve Smith in the past where he has not been able to score as big as in the past”.
