It has been two weeks since the heartbreaking blunder by India in not opting for Ravichandran Ashwin in the World Test Championship final at the Oval. The Test’s No. 1 bowler was dropped from the team so that an additional seamer could be part of the playing XI. The decision was widely criticized, and later this proved to be a decisive reason when Team India lost the final by 209 runs. After the team’s second consecutive WTC final defeat, Ashwin put out a tweet and explained it as an act of closure.

Just moments after defeat, Ashwin took to Twitter and expressed his disappointment at India’s loss. The veteran acknowledged his team for the efforts they made in the two-year cycle, and while congratulating Australia on winning the WTC final, he wrote that it was disappointing to end up on the wrong side but that it was a great effort to even reach here. He praised the team and thanked the coaching and support staff, who remained like a rock of support.

During an interview , Ashwin explained that the tweet was an act of closure so that he could move on from this upsetting event. The spinner also revealed how these things strain his family, especially his father. Ashwin stated that by getting closure, he can move on, and now that he has understood life better, the toll that trauma took on his family is unbelievable. He said, “My father has heart problems. After every single game, if something happens, he calls because he is tense. I go out and play because it is my control, but for my father, it is not, as he goes through double of this.

Ashwin also revealed that he does not like to point fingers at others for what happened to his career, and he also didn’t like the sympathy messages he received after the WTC final, which he cited as another reason behind his ouster. He said, That was the reason I tweeted because I wanted closure and hated that people were sympathizing with me. I couldn’t take it anymore.
Until now Ashwin has taken 474 wickets in test cricket, out of which 132 came during the WTC cycle he was a part of, which is the second highest in tournament’s history. He picked 61 wickets during 2021/2023  which is most by an Indian bowler. His batting abilities are also well known with five Test Centuries but all this was overlooked by skipper Rohit Sharma and Head coach Rahul Dravid.
