A 276 run loss doesn’t suit the potential of South Africa as a team. Facing troubles in the batting order, they require instant changes to bring back South Africa in prolific form.

South Africa is known for resilience and never giving up spirit. However, in the previous match against New Zealand, they rarely were in the game.

Their struggle has exploited many of their weaknesses which the head coach Mark Boucher will address and resolve as soon as possible.

South African openers have struggled to provide a solid foundation for a high score. When playing on low scoring wickets, the middle order has been able to play sensibly and put South Africa in a good position.

As an opening combination, Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar average a pitiful 20.78. Only Ireland and Afghanistan had a worse record for their starting combination in Tests since July 2018.

Markram was relegated to No. 3 to account for Keegan Petersen’s absence. However, the replacement opening partnership of Sarel Erwee and Elgar scored just one run in two innings.

The South African batting line-up also felt helpless to tackle out-swinging deliveries. As result, 13 out of the 20 wickets fell in the slip cordon. The hesitancy and indecisive approach never gave them a chance to settle their feet against the New Zealand bowlers.

A slew of Proteas hitters were run out while attempting to hit deliveries in the fifth stump channel. To avert another bloodbath, the coaching staff and players must address this shortcoming.

The sudden demolition of the South African batting order has opened a chance to find new consistent batsmen. South Africa has mostly hit the deck bowlers. Their efficacy might not produce desired results in New Zealand.

Lungi Ngidi has been dropped out of the second test because of a back injury. Stuurman, who replaced him in the first match, failed to make any positive mark.

There is unsettled playing 11 for South Africa as it appears now. Will the coach add a spinner to add extra dimension and flexibility in batting order! In a crucial test match, we are expected to see some experiments for better performance.
