Gavin Bazunu, who famously saved Ronaldo’s penalty, is set to move to St. Mary’s after impressive loan spells.

A little about the topic

The Saints completes the deal to sign an Irish player. Southampton lead the race for Republic of Ireland’s highly ranked Man City goalkeeper who is being watched by a number of PL clubs. The South Coast club are close to agreeing terms for the keeper, who was Portsmouth neighbors League One Player of the Year last season.

Gavin has impressed spells and international fees and the Saints are expected to pay over £12m for a player who already has 10 Ireland caps as well as 84 senior appearances for Portsmouth, Rochdale and Shamrock Rovers. Goalkeeper Fraser Forster will join Spurs in July on a free transfer after his contract with Southampton expires. Ex-custodian of the Citizens Caballero also walked out of his contract with uncertainty about his future, leaving McCarthy as the only head keeper at the club.

What did Cowley say about Gavin Bazunu?

The Citizens paid around £400,000 for the Dublin-born keeper when he was only 16 and could include a buyout option in any deal. The player earned his first international call-up as a teenager in a qualifying match in March 2021 and gained further importance when he saved a penalty from Ronaldo in a World Cup qualifier against Portugal last September. Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley said last season about Gavin Bazunu that let him say he is world class. According to Cowley, Bazunu will be a world-class goaltender.

Will there be another transfer to Man City

Third choice goalkeeper Scott Carson has agreed a new 12-month contract to stay at Etihad Stadium. The English player is close friends with Zack Steffen and Ederson said he has already benefited so much from his time here and hopefully can continue to help push the club’s other goalkeepers to be the best they can be. Meanwhile, England under-21 international Trafford has returned to League One Bolton Wanderers on a season-long loan.
