Former Barcelona star Hristo Stoichkov says he thinks Erling Haaland would be more effective than Kylian Mbappe with the Spanish giants now. Still, he also believes the legendary Johan Cruyff would have preferred a system involving the France international. Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe have risen to the top of the football in recent years, with the duo tied by many to be the heir apparent to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Virtually every team in world football would like to bring in the duo, with Barca among the interconnected parties. Still, Stoichkov says he believes the differentiation between the pair comes down to a matter of opinion more than anything else.
“With two or three new signings, you can make a powerful squad,” Hristo told reporters. “You need a left-back because Jordi Alba will be killed, and I will sign David Alaba because he can perform you in three different positions and very well in all three. And then a Haaland or a Mbappe. He added: “I think with Barcelona’s system, Haaland could be more effective. But if Cruyff were the coach, I can already say that Mbappe would be the first to sign. He will play without number nine, and he will play with Ousmane Dembele and Mbappe and Lionel Messi organizing”. Both Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland have been in great shape this season, with their teams firing in the Champions League quarterfinals.
Mbappe has 28 goals in 35 games this season, as PSG are fighting at the top of the Ligue 1. Erling, meanwhile, has scored 31 goals in 30 appearances, scoring a total of 47 goals in 48 games since joining Borussia Dortmund.
