The new Atlético Madrid striker suggested that his former club wanted him to leave because of his friendship with Lionel Messi.
The board were worried that Suarez was Messi’s friend
After Uruguay’s victory over Chile, Luis Suarez spoke about his recent exit from Barcelona. The new Atlético Madrid striker suggested that his former club wanted him to leave because of his friendship with Lionel Messi. “Koeman told me that I am not going to leave the club and that he had me in his plans,” Suarez told reporters. “It was not a coach; it was the directors who got rid of me at Barcelona. They were worried that I was Messi’s friend. They always complained that Messi did not get along well with any forwards in the club, and when he gets along well with one, they get rid of him. These are the things that they decide. And two years ago, they wanted to get rid of me to attract other forwards.
Luis find out through the press that he was leaving the club
They didn’t attract anyone to compete with me because I competed at the highest level. I earned respect and did not deserve to find out that I was leaving through the press. They talked about money and that I would go to another club. They had to call me and explain why I was leaving. I’m conscious of my age and wouldn’t have had any problem leaving.” On the other hand, Suarez did explain that Ronald Koeman wanted to keep him at the Camp Nou. “If a coach comes and says that you are not in his plans, then you start to doubt whether it is Koeman or the directors who do not want you there,” he commented. “Koeman called me to inform, but ten days after, I found out I was leaving. He said that if I can’t find the club, he will have me in mind.”
Suarez finally spoke about his relationship with Messi and how he thinks it influenced his exit. “They were worried that I got along with him,” he said. “Maybe it wasn’t that. I can’t find any reason why they want to separate us. I haven’t influenced Messi in any of his decisions. If Leo stays at Barcelona, he needs to enjoy himself and play at the highest level, like he always did. I think they did more to me than just change clubs. It was the way they did, but I never had any problems with the club.”
