Sydney Sixers sighs for relief after defeating Hobart Hurricanes

Sydney Sixers have finally registered their first victory of BBL12 after losing two matches in a row. Before today’s match, they were right at the bottom of the BBL 12 points table but with a hard won victory against Hobart Hurricanes, they have moved to the 7th place.

After getting a flourishing start, Sydney Sixers got a little off when they lost couple of wickets in single over. Patrick Dooley struck twice, sending back Jordan Silk and Dan Christian within space of three balls. By that time, Sixers’ were at 84 for 5 in the end of 9th over.

The match was reduced to 14 overs match after rain had chance to spoil the game. Sydney Sixers won the toss and chose to bat because they knew they could take advantage of wet ball. They posted 137 runs on board which seemed enough because slow bowlers were getting help from it.

Some solid knock from Kurtis Patterson (30 runs), Josh Phillipe (43 runs) and and Hayden Kerr (32 runs) who gave finishing touch to the team. For Hobart Hurricanes, it was their spinners who did the job in the middle overs. Shadab Khan (2 for 33) and Paddy Dooley (2 for 19) together sent back Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk and Dan Christian without scoring a single run.

Hobart Hurricanes never looked advanced for this. Whenever they tried to go big, they lost wickets right way. Losing 2 wickets in the powerplay for the score of 45 already put th behind Sydney Sixers. At the team Hobart Hurricanes needed 45 runs of two overs which is a very improbable task. But Asif Ali went big in back to back overs and almost brought Hurricanes back in the game on his back.

Asif Ali have Sydney Sixers scare

Asif Ali struck in the second-to-last over, scoring 26 runs off just five balls to give Kerr nightmares and the Sixers pause. Ali scored 41 off 13 balls before getting out by Naveen-ul-Haq who didn’t get it right but Jordan Silk grabbed Ali just at the fence. 5 inches inside and Hobart Hurricanes would have won the game out of nowhere.

There was also a debatable call when 6th ball of 19th over seemed a no ball. But umpires weren’t interested into so Ali would be feeling robbed right there.

Ben McDermott, the previous tournament player of the year, was taken out for a hefty 1-7 by on of the best in the business spinner Steve O’Keefe, who also bowled eight dot balls (17).
