CricketTahlia McGrath set to captain Australia in the fifth T20, Healy misses out due to injury

Alyssa Healy will miss the final T20 against India

Tahlia McGrath has only played 20 games in her T20 career and she has already established herself as a proper top order batter and wicket taking bowler. Now, McGrath has big responsibility on her shoulders because in absence of Alyssa Healy, she will be captaining Australia as the full time captain has suffered a calf injury.

Healy, who was designated captain for the T20 series in Meg Lanning’s absence, injured her calf while batting in the fourth T20 last Sunday. However, Australia won the match and with that victory sealed the series win. Australia has introduced a few new faces, building a new team because some big big names have considered retirement. Tahlia McGrath, 27, is best suited for the captaincy role because last month, she captained Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League and they won the title.

The all-conquering mighty Australians have won 16 straight series and have only lost one match in all forms in 2022—a super-over loss to India in the opening game of the series.

Healy is not expected to be ready for the fifth and final game, therefore McGrath, who led the Adelaide Strikers to their first WBBL championship last month, will likely assume leadership. McGrath has only participated in 18 T20 matches, 19 ODIs, and three tests for Australia.

Since her debut in October 2021, when she has played in all of her T20 matches, McGrath has advanced to the top spot among hitters in the game’s shortest format.

Healy is probably going to miss the last T20, but the Australians won’t play again until a domestic series against Pakistan in January, after which they’ll head to South Africa to compete for a third straight T20 World Cup championship in February.

“T-Mac was fantastic in the way that she‘s very cool, calm and collected,” Gardner said.

“It was a pretty big game for her to stand in and she did a fantastic job.

“I know most people would probably recognise that when they see her play, nothing really fazes her and I guess she had faith in all of our abilities, and we know our games pretty well.”
