India faced a massive defeat yesterday at the Oval Stadium in the World Test Championship against Australia, but things have taken a worse turn for them as Rohit Sharma and his entire squad are heavily fined by the International Cricket Council and they will lose all of their match fees. The ICC gave a statement and said action had been taken after Rohit and his team were found responsible for falling five overs short of the target. With Team India, Australia has also been withheld 80 percent of their match fees for falling short of four overs.
Gill fined 15 percent of his match fees
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for each over they fail to bowl in the allotted time. On the other hand, India’s opener Shubman Gill has also been fined 15 percent of his match fees for showing resentment against the umpire’s decision, which led to his dismissal in the second innings.
After the dismissal, many cricket enthusiasts criticized the decision and the umpire. After the play was over for the fourth day, Gill took Instagram and Twitter to show his displeasure as well and posted a picture of Cameron Green taking the catch in the slip. Gill’s action breaches article 2.7 which deals with public criticism and inappropriate comments in relation to an event in International matches. For violating this rule he will be fined 15 percent of match fees, that means he has to pay an additional fine as the total fine including his match fees is 115 percent.
The Indian Skipper slammed the Umpire as well
Gill edged a ball from Scott Boland to the gully fielder where Green jumped and took the catch, but the decision was sent for review to the third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, who examined the catch and declared the decision out. This left the skipper Rohit and Gill both in disappointment. The skipper’s dissatisfaction was also seen in the post-match conference as he stated that IPL has 10 different angles. He also said that for a grand event like WTC, technology should be used to its full extent.
India had an enormous target of 444 runs ahead of them, and the skipper and youngster Shubman Gill gave a good start to the team, scoring 41 runs in seven overs. Gill’s dismissal came at a vital stage of the match, which displeased the Indian side, and after his wicket, the momentum went to the Australian side as Rohit and Pujara also lost their wickets soon.
