Matthijs de Ligt has two years left on his contract with the Turin giants and a €120m release clause.
Why Matthijs de Light?
The Blues reached out to the Bianconeri to discuss a possible deal for the Dutch center player. Chelsea want to strengthen their defensive line after losing Rudiger, who left in a free transfer to join Real Madrid. The Blues are looking at the Dutch centre-back as a candidate to step into the back row ahead of next season and have already made contact with the Serie A side.
There was already contact between the Blues and Juve about the former Ajax center. Chelsea has not yet placed a bid, but they have asked for information on the availability of the Dutchman. The Bianconeri’s position is clear as they still want to sign a new contract with Matthijs de Ligt.
The player’s current deal ends in 2024, but the Turin giants are waiting for confirmation from him that he wants to extend his stay in Italy. If Matthijs de Ligt decides not to sign a new contract, the way out of Juventus could open up for the star, who has a €120m release clause.
What did Matthijs de Ligt say?
The Dutch international revealed earlier this month that he was in talks with the Serie A side over a new deal. However, De Ligt urged the Italian side to show they can improve on a fourth-place finish last season before the player is ready to commit to a new deal.
Matthijs de Ligt said negotiations are ongoing at the moment and when the time is right he will decide whether to renew or look elsewhere. According to De Ligt, he always looks at what is best for him in terms of a sports project.
Matthijs de Ligt says that two consecutive fourth place finishes are not enough, they should make progress in that direction because these are disappointing results. The Oranje player joined the Bianconeri from Ajax in 2019 and has made 117 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight times.
