Arsenal couldn’t get past their hosts despite some statistical dominance at St Mary’s Stadium.

What did Mikel Arteta say?

The Arsenal boss says the Gunners’ players are indeed falling behind their inability to turn a dominant tactical performance into points as Southampton held on to a 1-0 win in the PL. Arsenal were statistically vastly superior to their hosts at St Mary’s Stadium, especially in the second half as they chased after Jan Bednarek’s opening before half-time with an 83 percent possession rate and 19 shots. But they were unable to open up to the Saints thanks to a harsh performance from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s, and Mikel Arteta admitted that he found their defeat almost unthinkable after full-time whistle.

Mikel Arteta said in his post-match press conference that he is very upset and disappointed because when they see what happened on the court to concede and lose a football match he thinks it is a very difficult scenario to imagine. According to Arteta they tried to do the best they could, he can’t blame the attitude of the players. Mikel thinks it’s the other way around, the way they played just as well, but at the end of the day they have to put the ball into the net in the opponent’s half and they fail for various reasons.

Arteta talks about Fraser Forster

One of the reasons Arteta cited for his side’s failure to reach the right side of the result was Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who turned in one of his most impressive performances between posts this season. Mikel Arteta added about Forster that their keeper was exceptional. The number of situations they created, they needed more quality to complete them. The Spaniard says the players are really down today and they’re down because they can’t find the right answer – other than what they can do better around the box – not win that match.
