Fenway Sports Group President Mike Gordon was at Anfield last night’s Champions League semi-final against Villarreal with Jurgen’s agent Marc Kosicke and negotiations are expected to accelerate rapidly in the coming days.
What is the situation?
Jurgen has repeatedly said he will leave Liverpool when his contract expires in the summer of 2024. But there is an understanding that his stance has softened considerably in recent months, and the Reds now believe he can be persuaded to extend his seven-year association with the club. The German joined Liverpool in October 2015 and has since established them as one of the premier teams in world football. Jurgen Klopp won the Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup in 2019 and followed it up with the PL in 2020, the Reds’ first league title in 30 years.
This season they are heading for an unprecedented quadruple. They won the Carabao Cup in February and in its current form still stand a chance in the PL, the Champions League and the FA Cup, where they face Chelsea in next month’s final. The Reds’ hierarchy see him as the perfect head coach to lead the club forward and are willing to move heaven and earth to keep him. Jurgen, for his part, is happy and settled on Merseyside. Klopp has a strong relationship with the club’s owners, Gordon in particular, and is passionate about the direction the club is headed with Julian Ward, who was scheduled to take over as sporting director for Michael Edwards this summer.
