Richarlison never gives up

The truth is that it is easy to find arguments on and off the pitch, to back up that theory. With the microphone, in a few days, he insulted a German journalist in front of the media for criticizing Neymar and let slip in an interview that he wishes, upon retirement, to go to an island full of women to emulate the viral photo of Ronaldinho. It shows in his performances on the pitch, as he never gives up on chasing down opposition defenders. Richarlison’s World Cup debut was perfect, scoring both goals in the Canarinha’s win over Serbia. He won the MVP for being intelligent and acrobatic.

The forward could have lost his life in a mugging

For the first goal, he was quicker than the rest, reacting quickest to a loose ball following Vinicius Junior’s shot. The second goal has gone around the world because it is, no one disputes, the best goal of the World Cup so far. Vinicius drove forward and played the ball high into the box. There, with two seconds to think, Richarlison controlled with his left foot, and as the ball fell, he produced a powerful and acrobatic scissor kick into the back of the net. Richarlison could have lost his life in a mugging. That was the most critical episode of a tough childhood, shaken by the divorce of his parents at the age of seven.

His father, with money problems and depression, left to work in Minas Gerais. Little Richarlison lived in Nova Venecia with his mother, two brothers and two sisters in a tiny home, having to work from the age of 11: he sold ice cream, washed cars and helped his grandfather on the farm. The family worried about him in an area where drugs, guns and bags of money were the day-to-day. Then one afternoon, returning with a friend from a game, he was mugged. He had a gun pointed at him but managed to avoid harm. He never gave up, which is why he made his debut with Brazil: “I felt I had arrived on another planet. I wore the ‘9’ for the first two games, and I felt that this shirt weighed twice as much as any other”.

Tite trusts him blindly, and because he has earned Tite’s trust, Richarlison can boast 26 goals (19 goals and seven assists) for the national team in 39 caps.
