Thomas Tuchel believes he will be the next manager of Manchester United – despite the Reds’ sensational FA Cup triumph.

Reports in Germany claim that Thomas Tuchel turned down the chance to remain in charge of Bayern Munich because he wants another crack at the Premier League by succeeding Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. Ten Hag will officially learn his fate next week – but it appears that the Dutchman is doomed despite masterminding a dramatic 2-1 victory over rivals Manchester City at Wembley.

Tuchel is believed to be one of a number of names on the wish-list of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS Group should the decision be announced to end Ten Hag’s two-year reign. But according to sources in Munich, the 50-year-old reckons he has already nailed on for the job.

Bayern announced that Tuchel was leaving the club after it became clear that Bayer Leverkusen would be crowned Bundesliga champions. But the Bavarian club then decided to perform a U-turn by offering to hand him a new contract to stay in charge.

They were shocked when Tuchel turned down the proposal – and the suggestion in Munich is that he believes United have identified him as the man to replace Ten Hag.

Mauricio Pochettino is also in the frame after being sacked by Chelsea, while former Blues boss Graham Potter rejected the chance to become Ajax boss when it became clear United were thinking of replacing their manager.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl thought he had an agreement with Tuchel sealed only for him to change his mind. According to close friends of Tuchel in Germany, he is desperate to prove himself in the Premier League because he has ‘unfinished business”.

Tuchel signed an 18-month contract with Chelsea when the club asked him to replace Frank Lampard. He led Chelsea to the 2021 Champions League by plotting a 1-0 win over Pep Guardiola City in Porto. Tuchel’s reward was a new three-year contract – only for his position to be undermined by rows with director Marina Granovskaia over transfers.

When was sacked in September 2022, he wrote an open letter, detailing how he had not anticipated leaving Chelsea “for many years.”
