On a night of extraordinary drama at the Bernabeu, Karim Benzema crushed Chelsea’s hearts by sending the holders crashing out of the Champions League in the cruellest of fashions.

Chelsea were just 10 minutes away from pulling off a spectacular miracle in Madrid after fighting their way into a 3-0 lead after trailing 3-1 in the first leg.

Real substitute Rodrygo made it 3-1 on the night with his first meaningful touch to force extra time, and Benzema, Madrid’s hat-trick hero at Stamford Bridge, had the final say in the rollercoaster return with a 96th-minute header to send the La Liga leaders through 5-4 on aggregate and leave Carlo Ancelotti hailing the Bernabeu’s ‘magic.’

Chelsea produced a heroic performance to outclass Madrid, dominating the game for the majority of the night despite the odds being stacked against them.

They were left to rue the controversial decision to rule out Marcos Alonso’s second-half goal, as well as two errors in which they surrendered possession to their opponents, which preceded Madrid’s clinical goals.

‘We are very unhappy and quite proud at the same time because we played a magnificent match,’ Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said.

‘At the end of the day, we were unlucky.’ After today’s performance and match, we deserved to advance, but it was not to be. In games like this, you need luck, and we didn’t have it. We deserved to go through on both legs, and certainly today.’

‘Unfortunately, there are no regrets. These are the kinds of defeats you can be proud of. As a sportsman, you accept.’

At full-time, Tuchel expressed his displeasure with Marciniak, saying, ‘I was sad that the referee had a good time with my colleague Carlo Ancelotti.’

‘I know Carlo Ancelotti is a gentleman and a kind guy, but when I went to thank him for the match, I saw him laughing, smiling, and laughing loudly with the other coach.’

‘I believe this is the very worst time to do this after the last whistle, when one team has given their all and fought to the very last drop, and you go as a coach and see the referee smiling and laughing with the other coach.’ This is, in my opinion, extremely awful timing. This is what I told him.’

‘We scored four goals and had enormous chances to score even more,’ Tuchel added. ‘We were unfortunate, which is why we are disappointed. We were defeated by individual excellence and offensive conversion of our errors. Unfortunately, we made two errors after winning the ball, which were the most vital moments in games versus Real Madrid.’

‘At Stamford Bridge, they didn’t generate much, but they took every half-chances and converted them. This was enough, so you have to cut down on your mistakes, which we couldn’t do over two legs, which is why the deficit was so high, and when you come here and play a match like this and after the ball win we have two crucial ball losses, which could be a goal against most teams, but not with Real Madrid.’

‘The mystique of this stadium helps a lot to never give up,’ stated Madrid boss Ancelotti. We never surrender. At the Bernabéu, you can never believe that everything has gone wrong. I’m not sure how to express it, but there’s something magical about the Bernabéu that helps you.’

‘I am ecstatic to have made it to the semi-finals with this team, with this club, after so much suffering,’ says the player. ‘However, the more you suffer, the more content I am.’

‘In the end, we showed incredible character, determination, and teamwork to turn it around,’ Modric remarked. It’s a pretty delicious defeat.’
