On Thursday, New Zealand pacer Tim Southee received the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal, which is given to the country’s best cricketer for outstanding performances in a calendar year.

Besides Southee, Penn Kinsella was awarded the Burt Sutcliffe Medal. Also, Devon Conway was named Test Cricketer of the Year on the final day of the three-day awards ceremony. The Best Domestic Female Cricketer of the Year award went to Nancy Patel. And the Best Domestic Male Cricketer award was jointly given to Tom Bruce and Robbie O’Donnell.

The 33-year-old Tim Southee, representing Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing Indian Premier League, was named the Cricketer of the Year in 2021 for his outstanding performances in Tests and limited overs formats, both at home and abroad.

Tim Southee took 36 Test wickets last year at an average of 23.88. His best performance was his six for 43 against England at Lord’s. He also took five wickets during the team’s title win against India at the ICC World Test Championship in Southampton.

Tim Southee has 338 Test wickets to his name, which is 93 less than Hadlee, the country’s most successful Test bowler. Tim Southee has been in terrific form since 2020. Even in the IPL, he bowled well and bagged 3 wickets. However, he didn’t get further chances to play the matches.

“It is an honor to receive such a prestigious award. It is good to be appreciated but I think it shows how we have worked as a group and played cricket for a long time. It is wonderful to be part of the team during this phase. Also, winning matches for your country is very special,” Tim Southee told to stuff.nz.
