Fosu-Mensah confirmed the ACL injury

Bayer Leverkusen defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah has confirmed that he has suffered a cruciate ligament injury that appears to keep him from this summer’s European competitions. The defender, who brought his seven-year career at Manchester United to an end when he joined the German side in the summer transfer window, was forced out of his Bundesliga clash against Freiburg on Sunday. The Dutch international fell awkwardly after getting his boot stuck in the pitch. And sustaining a severe knee injury and will now be forced to spend the next few months on the sidelines. The player confirmed the ACL injury diagnosis to Votebalzone after Leverkusen head coach Peter Bosz correctly predicted the problem’s nature in his post-match interview. “We’re hoping for something else. But fear cruciate ligament injury,” Bosz told reporters after watching his side lose 2-1 at Bay Arena.

ACL injuries can usually take six to eight months to heal completely. It means Fosu-Mensah will not be able to play for Leverkusen again this season. He will also likely be unavailable for qualifiers when the Netherlands compete in the European Championships. And the tournament set to run from June 11 to July 11. Fosu-Mensah might even be hesitant to start the 2021-22 campaign. It depends on how well his rehab program is going. Still, his long-term future at Leverkusen remains safe with his current contract, which isn’t due to expire until 2024. The Netherlands international has struggled to establish himself in Bosz’s starting XI since joining Bayer Leverkusen.

He only made his fifth Bundesliga start of the season against Freiburg at the weekend. The 23-year-old left Man United in search of regular minutes. But has distinguished himself in just ten appearances for the German side in all competitions to date.
