Tottenham defender, Toby Alderweireld has signed a new contract until 2023 following Mourinho’s arrival.

The Belgium international’s previous deal was set to expire next summer. However, he has ended speculation about his future and signed a new contract in the club.

Alderweireld has made 179 appearances for Spurs since his arrival from the Spanish side, Atletico Madrid in July 2015.

Toby played in 50 of Tottenham’s 58 matches last season and started 12 of 13 in the run to the Champions League Final. So far this term, he has started 16 of the 17 games in the Premier League.

On the international stage, Alderweireld is fast approaching a century of caps having represented Belgium on 98 occasions. So far, he continues to excel for his country playing regularly alongside Jan Vertonghen.

To express his happiness, Alderweireld said, “There is no place I can be happier. I couldn’t see myself playing for another team.”

The new contract until 2023 has tripled Alderweireld’s wage to around £150,000 a week.

Ending two years of uncertainty around his future, Alderweireld recommitted to the club just days before speaking to foreign rivals over a Bosman summer exit.

The defender said a variety of factors helped him to come to his decision. But his love for the club was the key.

“I’m very happy. No words can describe. Another couple of years at Spurs, there is no place I would be happier.”

“I’m honored to play for this club. I’m a small piece of getting to the next level in a couple of seasons. Reaching the Champions League season in and season out and then reaching the final.”

“This is just the beginning of something big and very exciting. If you are happy and enjoying yourself, time flies. My family is happy here and I’m very lucky to have a very good connection with the fans.”

“I’m a Spurs player and I couldn’t see myself playing for another team. I am in love with the club and it feels both ways, I love the fans and the stadium. I’m living some sort of dream.”
