Joan Laporta has allegedly threatened the board
Barcelona presidential candidate Toni Freixa lamented fellow candidate Joan Laporte for allegedly threatening the club’s managing board ahead of the election. Laporta had previously issued a letter in which he punched the chairman of the management committee. Carles Tusquets, over his insistence on sealing the signing of Manchester City centre-back Eric Garcia, whose current deal with the club ends this summer before the club’s presidential election takes place. “The governing body is seeking consensus with the three candidates in exceptional circumstances due to the pandemic to complement their limitation of powers, because, it is true, this is not a board,” Freixa said. “And we went with an attitude of helping the club. And not pursuing personal electoral interests or saying things outside the meeting that were not said inside.”
“I do not understand the threatening letter. This attitude is blatant disloyalty towards the club. I tell you not to feel threatened, not to be afraid. We do not want to sign Eric Garcia now, but it is time to seal his signature for the summer. We ask the board members not to feel threatened and ensure that Eric Garcia will come on a free in June. Signing him free would be a great move. It is a coaching staff transfer, not the board. There is no excuse for not doing it. If they do this, the threat of legal action is great disloyalty towards the club. And so we ask you to respect the board. We ask for institutional loyalty at such important times. Members don’t deserve this show.”
