Sergio Ramos is the symbol of Real Madrid.
Toni Freixa, the Barcelona presidency candidate, has shown that Sergio Ramos has come close to joining the Catalan club in the past. Freixa is just one of those set to take office at the Camp Nou in the upcoming elections, and he talked about Ramos and other things ahead of January 24. “We cannot sign Ramos,” Freixa told reporters. “He is the symbol of Real Madrid and could not come here under any circumstances. I wish he had come when he was at Sevilla. As far as I understand, he was offered to Barcelona. I would have signed him. Lionel Messi’s future is something the new president will have to decide, and as long as Freixa recognizes his importance, he knows there are other pressing issues as well.
Messi is important, but he’s not the only one
“The president, together with the sports management team, will have to decide on a lot of things,” he said. “Messi is important, but he’s not the only one.” Without hesitating to stir up controversy, the presidential candidate expressed his belief that Real Madrid get favourable decisions more often than anyone. “Referees don’t help the big clubs,” Freixa said. “They are helping Real Madrid; I think so. For every one who can help Barcelona, there are 50 who are helping Madrid.” Ronald Koeman’s position has recently been questioned by the Blaugrana’s terrible start to the season, but Freixa said that the Dutchman has a place in the club. “He would continue with me,” revealed Freixa. “We have always given the coaches confidence at Barcelona. It happened with Frank Rijkaard and Johan Cruyff. That is what the club needs.”
Looking deeper into the club, he discussed the club’s needs and his chances in the election. “I see myself with a chance to win,” Freixa said. “Barcelona’s members want an honest president who will tell them the truth. Someone who can lead and carry Barcelona through the challenges they face. I have no intention of using politics to win this election.”
