Toni Kroos is in self-isolation
Real Madrid’s preparations for a major clash with the Athletic Bilbao on Sunday have been shocked by the news that Toni Kroos must take in a period of self-isolation. The German international has contacted someone who has tested positive for Covid-19, which means he must now stay away from Blancos’ leading group. Kroos did not contract the coronavirus himself, but every precaution is being taken to prevent any spread within Zinedine Zidane’s squad. A statement published on the club’s official website reads: “Real Madrid reports that our player Toni Kroos is in isolation as he was in direct contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19, although all tests that were carried out on the player were negative.” Zidane hoped that all those who did not care for injuries would be available to him for the trip to Bilbao.
Victory in that fixture is imperative for the Galacticos in their ongoing efforts to successfully defend their La Liga title. They are second in the table currently, two points behind neighbours Atletico Madrid with two games left to take in. While Zidane does not have options to cover any absence for Kroos, he finds himself short on defence options. Untimely setbacks have become an all too close theme for Blancos in the 2020-21 season. With so much still on the line, they are once again unable to call upon the services of talismanic captain Sergio Ramos as he nurses a hamstring injury. Ferland Mendy is also missing at left-back and faces a race against time to make the French squad for this summer’s European Championship.
Lucas Vazquez is another who saw his season come to an end, with a knee ligament injury keeping him on the sidelines, while Dani Carvajal is an experienced right-back who was dropped from Zidane’s plans.
