Tottenham have been looking at the Manchester United midfielder amid a bid from Ajax for their winger Steven Bergwijn

Tottenham have made contact with Jesse Lingard’s camp over a potential move to north London according to reports.

The 29-year-old Manchester United winger is out of contract in the summer and has struggled for regular football this season after returning from a successful loan spell at West Ham.

The Hammers have been linked with trying to bring the England international back to the London Stadium.

However, its understood that Spurs have also sounded out Lingard’s camp about a potential move in the summer and could explore the option of a January move.

His versatility means he can play on either flank or in an attacking midfield role or even as a striker to support Harry Kane if required. He would also bolster Tottenham’s homegrown British numbers.

Lingard will be available for nothing in the summer but it remains to be seen whether Spurs could move for him this month if United would be willing to sell a player to a top four rival.

Lingard is not getting much game time for the Manchester club, who will get nothing for him if he leaves this summer when his contract expires.

A permanent January move would seem unlikely for the player as well, as for all those coming to the end of their contracts a summer move would be more lucrative with the midfielder able to dictate his own terms and signing on fee without any added transfer fee.

The move comes with Ajax circling Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn. The Dutch club have been long time admirers of Bergwijn and are now understood to have made an initial bid worth around £15m for the Netherlands international, which was rejected by Spurs in falling well short of what they would consider for the winger.

The north London club signed Bergwijn less than two years ago for £27m in the 2020 January transfer window and he still has three and a half years left on his contract.
