Pierre Emile Hojbjerg stole the show as he made his Tottenham debut in the team’s 3-0 win over Ipswich Town of Saturday afternoon.

Signed from Southampton last week, Mourinho elected midfield Hojbjerg to start in the League One side. Seen as the man to solve Tottenham’s problems in the midfield, the Dane partnered with Harry Winks in the middle of the park as the head coach opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Nonetheless, it wasn’t the anchor role that the 25-year-old took up during his time on the pitch. Actually, he was seen as the player to sit deep and allow Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele to push on. On the contrary, Hojbjerg was pushing on very often. It was Winks who constantly sat deep allowing the new signing to roam forward and help Dele Alli and Co in the attack.

In the opening 10 minutes, Hojbjerg played a role in Son Heung-min’s first strike of the afternoon. When Ipswich Town tried to play the ball out from the back, the ex-Bayern Munich man was in the right position to slide in and play in Alli who passed to Son for a simple finish.

It was an outstanding play from Hojbjerg. The midfielder was very good on the ball and always looking to push on whenever he had to. He chased down brilliantly when the visitors were in control as Spurs looked to assert their dominance.

Hojbjerg was bold to place his foot on either as he tried to make his mark in the middle of the pitch. Unfortunately, his debut only lasted 63 minutes. Despite that, he made a good impression on his new team as there is still so much more to come from him.

Suppose he takes up the anchor role come next season or plays as a box-to-box midfielder, the Lilywhites and Mourinho have a good player at their disposal.

Mourinho’s comment on Hojbjerg debut

“Pierre is a player we have followed for quite a long time. The fact he had a year on his contract gave us a good position to negotiate for him with Southampton”. Said Mourinho.

“He is a very strong midfielder with good knowhow of what the Premier League is. To play a few years with Bayern Munich also gave him the knowhow of responsibilities to play for clubs with big ambitions”.

“We know this season is going to be absolutely crazy in terms of numbers of matches. The fixtures will be very condensed and we needed an extra man in out midfield options”.
