The UEFA Champions League is perhaps where Jurgen Klopp’s side can redeem themselves. They currently occupy second place in Group A and will be bidding to win here to push on and top their group for a fourth successive campaign.
Rangers
Rangers’ first season back in the UEFA Champions League group stages since 2010/11 hasn’t gone to plan whatsoever, as they’ve lost all their games so far without finding the net. That start forms part of a troubling spell in Europe’s elite club competition, with the Gers managing only one win across their last 19 UEFA Champions League group games, whilst they’ve also failed to score in eight of their last 11 matches in the competition proper. Those goalscoring woes weren’t evident at the weekend, though, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men picking up a morale-boosting 4-0 win over St. Mirren at Ibrox. That’ll give them a much-needed boost as they welcome a vulnerable Liverpool side. However, it can’t be overlooked that Rangers are winless in their last five outings vs English opposition, also failing to score in all of those matches too!
Liverpool
The mood in the Liverpool camp may be sombre as after their 3-2 loss to Arsenal over the weekend, they’re still winless on the road this season. The UEFA Champions League is perhaps where Jurgen Klopp’s side can redeem themselves. They currently occupy second place in Group A and will be bidding to win here to push on and top their group for a fourth successive campaign. Liverpool’s hopes of progression may lie in the hands of their defence, as while the Reds have scored in 19 of their last 20 UEFA Champions League group stage matches, keeping clean sheets has been their biggest challenge lately. They’ve shut out their opponents on the day only three times in their last 14 matches, one of those being the 2-0 win over Rangers in the reverse fixture.
Rangers’ domestic top-scorer Antonio Colak has scored a brace in his last four goalscoring outings. At the same time, a wrath of injuries means Liverpool may need good luck charm Diogo Jota to play a pivotal role – they’ve never lost when he’s got on the scoresheet. There’s been goals in both halves in 13 of Liverpool’s last 15 matches.
