MS Dhoni’s Future at CSK Hinges on Retentions

The recent acquisition of India Cements Ltd by UltraTech Cement has caused a stir, raising questions about the future of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, it has now been clarified that despite the corporate deal, CSK will remain under the ownership of N Srinivasan and his family.

India Cements, the original owner of the CSK franchise, will transfer control to the Aditya Birla Group. However, CSK is now an independent company owned by shareholders of India Cements, with the N Srinivasan family holding a controlling stake in the franchise.

Separation from India Cements

CSK was separated from India Cements in 2015, with shares distributed among the then shareholders. The majority stake was retained by the Srinivasan family. Once the acquisition by UltraTech Cement is complete, N Srinivasan will no longer hold shares in the company.

India Cements, a 77-year-old company, has employed several cricketers including MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, and R Ashwin. The exact reason for Srinivasan selling his family’s shares is unclear, but he will continue to control 18 clubs in the Chennai league associated with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association.

Dhoni’s Future with CSK

It has been reported that MS Dhoni’s future with CSK will depend on the number of retentions allowed in the upcoming IPL season. If a sufficient number of retentions are permitted, Dhoni could continue as a player. Otherwise, he may transition into a mentor role within the team.

The outcome of the BCCI’s meeting with IPL team owners on July 31 will play a crucial role in determining Dhoni’s future at CSK. Rupa Gurunath, N Srinivasan’s daughter, will be attending the meeting.
