The main defender, Jan Vertonghen, leaves Tottenham Hotspur. So, Jose Mourinho will need a new defender.

Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen has announced his departure from Tottenham Hotspur.

“My time in the team is coming to an end. This is a very sad day for many reasons. “I will miss friends, staff, playing in an amazing stadium and, of course, the fans,” Vertonghen wrote on his official Twitter page.

Throughout the season, Jan Vertonghen’s contract was the subject of talks for the English press. Vertonghen’s contract expires this summer, and the parties could not agree on a new contract. That is why Jose Mourinho trusted the Belgian more rarely and gave a little playing time.

The story that was expected was officially confirmed yesterday. Vertonghen leaves the team and says goodbye to his teammates. Without him, Colombian Davinson Sanchez and Belgian Toby Alderweireld will play in the center of the Londoners’ defense. However, Jose Mourinho believes that Tottenham need reinforcements in the center of defense. Without Jan Vertonghen, there will be no one on the bench to ensure the Alderweireld-Sanchez pair.

Nothing is known yet about the plans of the Belgian himself. He will join the new club as a free agent. Jan Vertonghen spent eight years at Tottenham Hotspur and played in 232 games.
