Bayern Munich is plotting a shock swoop to sign Jack Grealish from Manchester City, as Vincent Kompany eyes his first summer transfer.
Kompany is closing in on becoming Bayern’s new manager following the departure of Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season. The Belgian boss led Burnley to the Championship title in 2022/23, though he has been unable to keep them in the Premier League this term.
The 38-year-old is believed to have identified Grealish as one of his key targets to help rebuild his Bayern team. Kompany is understood to be a huge fan of the player and Bayern thinks there is a chance that the ex-Aston Villa midfielder would be tempted with a move to Germany.
Bayern believes the opportunity to link up with England team-mate Harry Kane will be a major pull for Grealish. The success of Jadon Sancho since arriving back at Borrusia Dortmund from Manchester United could sway Grealish after a difficult season at City.
Grealish, 28, played just over 1000 minutes of Premier League football for City as they won a historic fourth successive title, starting just ten games. He featured more regularly in the Champions League, starting both matches in the quarter-final defeat against Real Madrid.
In total, Grealish scored just three goals and added three assists in 36 appearances in all competitions. That form has seen him fall down the pecking order at the Etihad, with Jeremy Doku and Phil Foden often among those preferred. And Bayern think they can offer Grealish the chance to resurrect his career.
The proposed move, however, is set to be met with resistance from Pep Guardiola. He is a huge fan of Grealish and wants to keep most of his squad together as City eyes a fifth straight Premier League title and another Champions League crown next season.
Grealish is seen as a key figure in the City dressing room and has become a cult figure among the supporters for his antics after their recent successes. Grealish made sure to enjoy their latest historic Premier League title success as he was pictured stumbling out of a bar at 5am on Monday morning.
Amid the noise surrounding his future, Grealish has been included in the England training squad ahead of Euro 2024. The Three Lions face Serbia in their opening group fixture on Sunday, June 16 before going up against Denmark and Slovenia. And Grealish is confident about their prospects of winning the tournament this summer.
He said, “It is unbelievable, honestly. When you go and train there and the talent that is there is just frightening. I think now there is so much young talent coming through as well. The last few tournaments we have been close and in everyone’s mind we want to succeed in this tournament.
“Listen, I think it is doable. We have a really good manager and a really good assistant in Gareth and Steve Holland and obviously, the talent in the team speaks for itself.”
