Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of Liverpool’s greatest offensive options in the Champions League final but his defensive weaknesses were revealed by Vinicius Jr’s winning goal.

A rare burst down the right side, a cross from Federico Valverde, and he was there at the far post, slipping past Trent Alexander-Arnold to score. Vinicius Junior, a young Brazilian. It was difficult to deny that Liverpool, and particularly Alexander-Arnold, had been warned.

When Real knocked Liverpool out of this tournament last season, Vinicius caused problems for the Liverpool right-back. Since then, he has improved and had been outstanding in the semi-final against Manchester City.

In the build-up to the game, Alexander-Arnold was questioned about his immediate opponent, to which he stated that Liverpool will defend as a unit. What else could he possibly say?

However, for a long time, the 23-year-old has had to answer concerns about his nuts and bolts defense. He’s been accused of turning off at crucial times. It’s difficult to conclude there was no proof of it in this case.

Replays of a goal scored against the flow of play revealed that the scorer was probably six inches offside. They also indicated that Alexander-Arnold was slightly on his heels when the ball came across. It would be unfair to blame him for the goal. There doesn’t have to be a single person to blame for everything that goes wrong for a football club. Could Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, have done a bit better? Possibly.

It was also a shame because he had been fantastic up until that point. Alexander-Arnold had been one of Liverpool’s most effective outlets with so much possession and territory. It was clear how Alexander-Arnold loves to play this game in this video.

When his own team got the ball, he would frequently push himself in front of Real’s front three in an attempt to join in with Liverpool’s aggressive play, or at the very least make himself accessible if the ball needed to be recycled deep.

This is something that can occasionally take him off guard. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s coaching staff scoff at accusations that the player they’ve worked so hard to develop is incapable of defending. But it’s not his first inclination.

He may be oblivious to what’s going on behind him on occasion, and there have been examples of this here before the Vinicius goal.

This is when his bond with his teammates, particularly with his central defender, becomes crucial. Last night, Ibrahima Konate, a young Frenchman, was chosen ahead of Joel Matip in a close call, and Konate was there for his team-mate a couple of occasions when Vinicius found a way into the pocket behind the Liverpool full-back.

Thiago Alcantara, a midfielder, spotted the threat and dropped in to remove the ball off Vinicius’ toe in the penalty area after he had managed to slip through a space between defenders on another occasion. This is what managers mean when they say their teams defend as a unit.

Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, was a threat, something Klopp appreciates. Alexander-Arnold was mainly free to play as an extra offensive player as Liverpool dominated possession and territory with remarkable ease.

His first notable contribution was taking hold of the ball after Jordan Henderson’s lay-off in the Real penalty area and feeding it to Mo Salah. Thibaut Courtois made the first of several excellent stops after the Egyptian’s low attempt.
