A few days ago Former India captain Kapil Dev criticized team management for including Virat Kohli into the team despite his poor form. Virat Kohli has been all time low in his career for some time now. Kapil Dev gave example of R. Ashwin, saying that if a player of his stature can be rested continuosly they why can’t Virat Kohli? However, former India selector Sarandeep Singh on Monday responded to Kapil Dev’s remarks.

Deepak Hooda’s impressive performance as a top-order batsman – in Kohli’s absence in the last two T20I series against South Africa and Ireland – sparked a debate over the need for Kohli in the Indian line-up. He impressed the selectors with a sensational ton in Ireland and smashed 33 runs in the first T20I against England. However, he lost his spot to Kohli, who returned to the Indian team after a short break but was dismissed for just 1 run in the second T20I.

Speaking on the ongoing debate around Kohli’s form and his place in the Indian team, Kapil Dev while talking to a news channel said, “Play in-form players when you have a lot of options. Can’t go but you have to look for current form. You may be an established player but that doesn’t mean you will be given chances even if you fail in five matches in a row. If you can be dropped from the Test team, then your No. 1 batsman can also be dropped.”

However, Sarandeep’s thinking was quite different from that of Kapil Dev regarding Virat Kohli’s form. Responding to Kapil Dev, he said that Virat Kohli has the ability to win the World Cup on his own.

While talking to Times Now he said, “What are the selectors doing to understand where his batting is going wrong? He shouldn’t be dropped. Everyone knows his abilities. He alone can win you the World Cup. ”

The former Indian cricketer, however, was upset over the decision to rest Kohli for the West Indies ODI series.

“Then why is he being rested? What is this illogical way of selecting players? He plays one series, then rests and then he takes another series. If he is not performing, he should be kept in the team. Give him a place, that’s the only way for him to get back in form,” he said eventually.
